AYURVEDA IS A natural healing system that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The Oxford English Dictionary’s definition is “the traditional Hindu system of medicine (incorporated in Atharva Veda, the last of the four Vedas), which is based on the idea of balance in bodily systems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing.”
It uses holistic, natural remedies and practices to bring our physical and mental selves into balance, responding to the constant changes within us and our environment. It is based on the idea that prevention is better than cure, that you should treat the body as a whole.
Each being is based on the three Doshas (life forces) – Kapha (earth), Vata (air), and Pitta (fire) – which correspond to our physical, emotional, behavioural and mental characteristics. The blend of the 3 mind/body traits is unique to each person and the idea is to strive to maintain the balance between them.
