A COUPLE OF years ago, I dipped my toe into the water of road bikes and purchased a second-hand ‘Specialized Roubaix’ road bike because I had this overwhelming urge to start road cycling. Now I’m hooked.
‘Fitter, Faster and Clad in Lycra.’
Most sports have specialist gear, and cycling is no exception. Yet, professional cycling gear can make most cyclists look as ridiculous as the middle-aged guy I regularly see in his ill-fitting replica Liverpool football shirt. Because Lycra (worn by the cyclist) isn’t the easiest material for most people to wear and look good.
Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy famously said “Lycra isn’t the most elegant material you can wear, and professional cycling gear generally looks awful on pretty much anyone heavier than 8st.” He added that “Amateur cyclists don’t have to pull on a pair of tight-fitting shorts to look good.” Is he right?
