WHILE MOST STATIONS try to appeal to a younger audience, older listeners have turned to Boom Radio, who target the UK’s estimated 14 million Baby Boomers.
The airwave’s newcomer is the brainchild of industry veterans Phil Riley and David Lloyd. As chief executive of Chrysalis Radio, Riley masterminded the launch of Heart FM before overseeing the group’s sale to Global in 2007. Lloyd has four decades of experience as a presenter and executive at stations including LBC and Virgin.
I’m a Baby Boomer, but I only occasionally listen to any radio station because my musical taste is so eclectic. My music indoctrination came from my late elder brother who was 12 years my senior. He was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan along with Led Zeppelin, Cream and The Isley Brothers. By 12, my music was influenced by the chart shows and Top of the Pops, before I started listening to R&B music; sung by black people who looked like me.
