About The Challenge

AS PART OF this year’s National Fitness Day, ‘the Hood Fitness Challenge’ marks the first of a new annual event, with the goal being for every gym and local authority to host it in years to come.
The event is a collaboration between David Lloyd, Nuffield Health and Super-A. There will also be the community organised football team West Fulham taking the fitness challenge with all funds raised donated to the charity Fulham Good Neighbours.

The Hood Fitness Challenge is for everyone: from the newcomer who has just started their fitness journey, to the seasoned athlete who has their sights on becoming ‘The Fittest in the Hood’. From a range of backgrounds and levels of ability, all age groups can take part, and we can all celebrate our accomplishments together at the end of the Challenge

The 1-Minute Cycle, Row, Run Challenge!

It is brutally simple: to see how far you can cycle, row, run in one minute to record the furthest distance – an assessment of your anaerobic power. For example, row as hard as you possibly can for every stroke through the minute. There is no stroke rate cap; the recommended drag factor is as high as it will go. Science says that, over a three month period, as little as one minute of intensive exercise could have the same health benefits for the heart, respiratory fitness and muscles as 45 minutes of more typical continuous exercise.

How can I possibly compete against someone 10+ years younger?

Push-ups, sit-ups and squats are a universal test of body strength because they are easy to learn and don’t require any equipment. Depending on your age, you should be able to do a specific number of push-ups, squats, and sit-ups in one minute.

Keep in mind that testing for each exercise includes a judge who can monitor the technique. If you’ve been practicing push-ups at the gym but you aren’t going down all the way or locking your elbows out at the top, your numbers might fall when you start to use strict form.
